Did You Know?
- There are 7 billion people in the world. 34% - or 2.4 billion - are children.
- 1.4 billion children live in poverty. This means that they are severely deprived of adequate food, drinking water, sanitation facilities, health services, shelter, and education.
- Almost 20% of the world's population - or 1.4 billion people - live on less than $1 a day. That's 1 in every 5 people living off of $365 a year.
- Each day 21,000 children die before reaching their 5th birthday. That equals nearly 7.6 million children each year. It is as if every child under the age of five in the United States died over the next two years.
Why UNICEF?
UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) works in over 190 countries and territories aiming to save and improve children's lives by providing health care, immunizations, clean water, sanitation, nutrition, education, and emergency relief. It was founded in 1946 and helped in emergency situations after WWII in China, the Middle East, and Europe. Today it helps provide relief and support to children living in 3rd world and developing nations. It gives emphasis on fighting major causes like death among children under the age of five. Some goals as a club that we would like to pursue are to educate, advocate, and fundraise for the most serious causes. We want to raise awareness of the various issues surrounding every society in the world. We also want to have community outreach and numerous amounts of volunteer participation. Our main focus is to fundraise for UNICEF, so they can ensure health and survival for everyone all around the world. Giving volunteer hours is a privilege to members. Our main goal is to help people learn about the difficulties of underprivileged people.
